Newsworthy Items for the Professional Teacher
Captain Planet Foundation
The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund and
support hands-on environmental projects for children. Our
objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower
children around the world to work individually and collectively to
solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and
communities.
Deadline: March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31
Eligibility: All applicant organizations must be exempt from federal
taxation under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501. CPF will
only review proposals that are submitted using our online
application form which is located under the heading, "Application
Process."
Areas: Projects must promote understanding of environmental
issues, focus on hands-on involvement, help develop
problem-solving skills and include adult supervision. The range of
grants awarded is generally $250-$500.
The ACBL Educational Foundation
The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), a 160,000 member
organization focused on the game of contract bridge, created this
foundation to give grants to educational projects that "make
bridge a game played by people of all ages and walks of life."
Deadline: Proposals should be received at least three months prior
to the program's scheduled start date.
Funds: Vary. Recent grants have ranged from $150 to over
$50,000.
Eligibility: The ACBL makes grants to schools, nursing homes,
hospitals, community centers and local ACBL units, and will support
both local and national programs.

American Radio Relay League's Victor C. Clark Youth
Incentive Program
The American Radio Relay League Foundation supports the
development of amateur radio among students and aims to enrich
the experience of radio amateurs under the age of 18.
Deadline: None. The foundation reviews proposals throughout the
year.
Funds: Mini-grants of up to $1,000 each.
Eligibility: High school radio clubs, youth groups, general interest
radio clubs and non-profits that sponsor groups of students or get
them involved in radio club activities.
Areas: Applicants may use grants to secure equipment for
antennas for club stations, purchase training materials and support
local service projects that bring favorable public exposure.

DIRECTV Goes to School
The DIRECTV Goes to School program offers educators a free, nonviolent educational
programming package and satellite equipment. SCHOOL CHOICE is available to state-accredited
public and private schools serving students in grade K-12. A free DIRECTV Multi-Satellite System
will also be provided, although a limited quantity is available. Installation costs are not included.
Deadline: Rolling
Eligibility: K-12 schools

Small Innovative Grants
The American Legacy Foundation, established as part of a lawsuit
settlement with cigarette and tobacco companies and sponsors of
the "truth" anti-smoking advertising campaign, offers grants to
reduce tobacco use by youths, reduce exposure to second-hand
smoke and increase successful quitting among all ages and
populations.
Deadline: Ongoing. The foundation prefers applicants to use the
online application system available on the website.
Funds: $2 million is available on an annual basis for these grants -
ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 each.
Eligibility: State or local political subdivisions and nonprofit 501(c)
(3) organizations based in the 46 states, the District of Columbia
and five territories identified in the settlement with tobacco
