Blogging! Blogging?
by Elsa M. Pagliery, TeacherNet.com
What is a Blog or Weblog? Basically it's an electronic version of a personal journal with a twist
that being that everyone online can now see your blog. So why do teacher's blog?
Annette Lamb1 a professor at the School in Information and Library
Science at Indiana University who currently teaches elementary school, and elementary library media
uses blogs as a tool for information inquiry. Lamb tells us that "Students record their thinking as
they go through the process of solving problems, answering a question, or conducting research."
Lamb isn't alone in her thinking; many teachers are integrating blogs into their classrooms as a ways
of communicating with parents and students. Teachers post generic information about their class that
relates to upcoming assignments and/or school activities. Parents can now go online and find out about
tomorrow's homework assignment. Some teachers offer detailed assignments and even provided printable
forms in their blogs. This is a good way to alleviate problems with forgotten worksheets. Students use
blogs to keep track of their school projects. Lamb goes on to say, "A blog can keep students on-track
and allows the teacher or peers to make comments or suggestions throughout the information inquiry
process."
By the way as an editor for the TeacherNet website, I've spent the last few years posting countless
articles, news briefs, and comments relating to the content posted on our website -- I guess that makes
me a blogger too!
